Disbound extracts rather crudely bound in later stiff card wrappers with the appropriate Strand cover (XXII) laid back as a decorative finish. The serialisation preceded the Newnes publication of the novel by a year or so following public outcry over Doyle's dramatic closing of the Holmes series with the apparently fatal fall at Reichenbach.
